Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of pollution emission into environment. There are reviewed theoretical and experimental research works performed by foreign authors. Approach to the new European driving cycle (NEDC) observing at the existing laboratory conditions the volume of pollutants emitted by cars is the purpose of the performed research. This driving cycle consists of the two driving modes: urban driving (ECE 15) and country driving (EUDC). Duration of the first mode is 200 s, maximum speed reaches 50 km/h, and it is repeated 4 times; duration of the second one is 400 s, maximum speed – 120 km/h, once performed.
Application of the NEDC has begun in 2000 in the entire European Unity (EU) and now is being used for evaluation of pollution emission of petrol engines as well as for diesel ones. This cycle is used for research if cars of EU producers, sold in the EU, meet the stringent requirements established by ,,Euro” standards.
The paper describes experimental research of cars with petrol engines (BMW 318i and Peugeot 407 SW). Attempts are made for precise approach, as possible, to the NEDC cycle and for evaluation of changes of the volume of the engine pollution gas emission related to the approached driving cycle. The found results are analysed – dependences of gas pollutant volumes between the researched cars are compared, the found values are compared with currently valid legal documentation of the Republic of Lithuania, which is used during the obligatory technical inspection.

Keyword(s): European driving cycle, NEDC, gas pollutants of petrol engine emission, traction test facility, urban mode, country mode.
